Featured Projects
Handspring Puppet Company - “Faustus in Africa”
Set and Prop Construction
One of our largest sets to date, combining technical precision with artistic vision. After a six-month endeavour, Pink House Music & Ukululama Projects, completed the rebuild of the iconic “Faustus in Africa” set. Based on original design from the award winning 1995 production by William Kentridge and the Handspring Puppet Company, the project held a personal connection to Pink House Music, with Dean Pitman having worked on the original production over 30 ago. As it embarked on its journey, first to Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre and then onto various theatres across Europe, Pink House Music continued to push the boundaries of set construction, with the highest elements topping out at 4,8 meters tall.
Crawford College Lonehill - “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief”
Project Production Management, Stage and Set Construction, Sound Mastering, and Operating.
From original concept to final roll out, Pink House Music was involved in all elements of production management for Crawford College’s 2024 Major Production: from initial consultation, design, liaison between departments and external service providers, construction and set up of elements, assisting with backing tracks and musical direction, and overseeing as well as operating sound for the four show run. It was a rewarding project working with talented students and dedicated staff.
Market Theatre - “A Marry Little Christmas”
Set Construction, Rigging, and Painting
After initially turning down the project due to the size of the set, Pink House Music, at Dennis Hutchinson’s insistence, was able to make use of the Market Theatre’s Workshop space to construct the set for “A Marry Little Christmas”. It was a large “traditional” box set, with intricate detailing and fully functional elements that the actors and directors made good use of. In addition to the set, Pink House Music also built special effect elements such as rain and snow bags, and a Christmas tree with a remote operated “drooping star”. Pink House Music also provided and designed the show's soundtrack. Everything was finished to meet Denis’s high levels of expectation, to create a bright and lively show.
Steyn City School - “Aladin Jnr.”
Set Construction
Working with some pre-existing set elements, in consultation with the staff of Steyn City School, Pink House Music completed the design and construction of the set elements for “Aladin Jnr.”. From reinforced bridge sections, moving set elements including two separate trucks, along with boxes and steps, the set was built to accommodate a large and enthusiastic cast, superbly finished and painted by the talented Arts department at Steyn City School. Much to the satisfaction of the Pink House Music team, and a value add for the school, multiple set elements have been used in several subsequent productions and events.
Jeppe High School for Boys - “A Midsummer’s Nights Dream”
Set Construction, Lighting Equipment Supply, Rigging, and Lighting Operating
The Jeppe High School for Boys 2023 production of “A Midsummer’s Night's Dream" posed several challenges for Pink House Music, the largest challenge being the director’s vision to stage the production in the open air in the middle of a car park. Pink House Music assisted with the design and subsequent construction of all set elements, the provision of ambient lighting effects utilising the trees and surrounding buildings, as well as the theatrical lighting for the performance area. Load shedding posed an interesting challenge to the production as low wattage lighting had to be provided to reduce the load on the generator (which would change over halfway through the show). Pink House Music was able to manage this transition seamlessly.
